Don’t Give Up On Your Dreams…No Matter How Long It Takes To Get There!

When pursuing a dream, there will be days when you may question yourself and wonder if you are up to the task. There are also days when you will wonder if you are doing the right thing. There’s no way to know for sure of course. There’s no way to be certain until we cross that bridge and take some action towards that dream.

I first considered going to medical school exactly 10 years ago. I can’t believe that much time has passed already. During that time, I have gotten married to an amazing man and had two beautiful children. I have had the chance to live among people in a different culture from the one I grew up in. I have had the opportunity to gain valuable research experience in the pharmaceutical industry. And I have met some amazing people who have had a significant impact in my life. My path to medicine has taken much longer than I anticipated but I’m not planning on giving up, and I am grateful for the experiences I have had in the mean time.

So if it seems that your dream is taking an eternity to be realized, remember that nothing that has happened along the way has been a waste. Many of the experiences will have added to your character and perhaps better prepared you for what lies ahead. What is important, if you are going for something new and exciting, is that you are taking some concrete steps towards realizing your dream. It could be going back to school or taking an online course to get the knowledge you need. It could be shadowing someone to see what their day is like on the job. It could be getting some volunteer or work experience. The important thing is that we do something about it rather than dwell on how far we have yet to go or how difficult it may be to get there.

  1. Great thoughts Kalu on how to make the time count between dream and realization! Just read an interesting graduation quote in which the speaker said (paraphrased) “Don’t just chase your dreams, chase your reality.” Like you, I didn’t think it would be such a long time between my decision to go to medical school and finally getting to go, but I was a stronger candidate for my experiences and a more mature person as well, important for medicine. Thanks for the reminder!
